Coder Dojo

Surely you have read about the coder dojo movement that is sweeping the globe?

It's where mentors give up their saturdays for free, to teach kids to code. It has been running for less than a year and has already hit places as far flung as China and California. And it all started here in Ireland,, in cork to be exact. Lisa and I visited Bill Laoi the entrepreneur along with James Whelton who founded the movement. We hung out with the kids. I showed them the game I was making and we discussed how it might be used as an educational tool. We left inspired and totally geared up for our meeting with Adrian Bannon and Brendan Smith, who were looking for co-mentors to found a Galway Coder Dojo.

Lisa and I were at the founders meeting and have not missed a session yet. http://emc23.com/web-development-blog/281-coder-dojo-galway

  • Making a shot-glass out of a jawbreaker
Last summer, Hifijohn successfully turned a giant jawbreaker on his lathe, making a beautiful, striped and striated shot glass (or egg cup) out of it: "My third attempt at turn a giant jawbreaker. I put some of my guitar playing songs to make the video a little bit more enjoyable."...
  • Cool clothes and styles of Maker Faire attendees
Earlier today Gareth Branwyn had the idea that we should run an image gallery of the great clothes worn by people who come to Maker Faire Bay Area 2012 (taking place now). So Gar and I went out and snapped some photos of folks wearing interesting outfits. We'll post another...
  • When Thomas Edison forced the cats to box
These delightful boxing felines were equipped with miniature boxing gloves and set to brawling by none other than legendary douchebag Thomas Edison, as a means of promoting his newfangled moving picture device in 1894. Thomas Edison - 1894 Boxing cats (Thanks, Isaak!)
